The impact of flooding is increasingly in the news – around the world, and here in Canada. While flooding is a natural weather phenomenon, climate change is exacerbating this threat. Causing unpredictable rainfall patterns, more extreme storms, rapid snow melt, and rising sea levels, climate change is affecting the way we must respond to this threat.
Not only does flooding degrade water quality and lead to soil erosion, compromising our agricultural systems, but it can overwhelm our water infrastructure, affect our communities and homes, and possibly even impact human health and wellbeing. These impacts are not equally distributed – some groups are more vulnerable than others.
New approaches to governance are necessary to mitigate these challenges.
To explore these and other challenges, UW Climate Students and Fossil Free UW invite you to attend:
Water You Waiting For: Water Governance and Equity Webinar
Featuring:
Shaieree Cottar
Shaiere is the coordinator for the Canadian Coastal Resilience Forum and a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management. Her research is on flood risk management and Canadian policies related to managed retreat, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and resilience building against hazards across communities in Canada.
Felicia Watterodt
Felicia is an MES student in Geography and Environmental Management. Her research examines how climate disasters, such as the 2021 BC atmospheric rivers, influence policy change, governance, and adaptation decision-making.
